Materials required: ladders, knife, measuring tape, drill, pencils, socket wrench, two-foot level, chalk line, three-inch galvanized lag screws, brackets, and most importantly the retractable cloth awning kit.

Here the steps to install a retractable patio awning:

1. Rest the awning cloth on the plastic sheet which was used to wrap it. Ensure that it is resting in a manner such that the valance is hanging down and facing forward and the front is facing outwards. Let the brackets sit on the side.
   
2. With the help of a measuring tape, measure the awning length. On the walls where you want to mount the awning, mark both ends of the awning. Again, measure the locations of the hardware and mark the points on the wall where the brackets will be mounted.
   
   Keep in mind to evenly space all the four brackets so that it is properly supported.
   
3. Place the first bracket in its position and use a pencil to mark the places where you are going to drill the holes. Bore a hole in the place that has been marked as the drill point and ensure that there is a study anchor. Repeat this step for the other bracket hole.
   
4. Now attach both the outside brackets using the three-inch galvanized lag screws and socket wrench. Install the inside brackets using the same method but first, draw a chalk line between both of them so as to determine the level of brackets.
   
5. Now that all the four brackets are secured in their places, lift the awning carefully and position it. Match the awning ends to the marks you had made in step 2.
   
6. Slightly lift the front of the awning and close the brackets. Next, slip the bracket cover on the square tube of the awning. Shut the bracket by attaching the hardware and tighten it with the help of a socket wrench. This procedure is to be repeated for the brackets.
   
7. Use the crank to open the awning after carefully removing the safety bands from the awning arms. Adjust the angle, level and height of the awning. Your retractable patio awning is installed and ready to use.
